The Improviser
The Improvisor received a rave, 4 1/2 star review in DownBeat. It features Von Freeman recorded at three Chicago area locations: the New Apartment Lounge backed by his working Chicago rhythm section, the Green Mill backed by visiting jazz dignitary Jason Moran and his trio and at The Chicago Cultural Center (an a cappella track taken from a Jazz Institute of Chicago Duo Concert with Jason Moran). This one is widely recognized as Vonski best recent outing. Great blowing throughout. Many highlights.
Musicians: Von Freeman, tenor saxophone; Michael Raynor, drums (3-6); Michael Alemanna (3-6); Jack Zara, bass (3-6); Jason Moran, piano (7, 8); Mark Helias, bass (7); and Nasheet Waits, drums (7).
